On October 15, 2011, The Texas City La Marque Jaycees held a Hamburger Cook-off Contest to launch the new chamber of the Texas City La Marque Jaycees. This fundraiser was held to raise funds for the Jaycees to help families in need at Christmastime through local elementary schools.
In 2011, the Texas City La Marque Jaycees sent a letter to the counselor at each elementary school in our area asking for them to identify one family that would benefit from our “Christmastime from the Jaycees” program. Each school nominated a family and provided the family with a short form to help us go shopping in November. We purchased over $100 worth of clothes, gadgets, toys, etc. for EACH child in each family. The schools were elated when they received the wrapped bundles, and we are sure the kiddos were as well. The Jaycees care about the people in our community and we were so very happy to give back. That’s what we are all about.
On April 4 of this year, the TCLM Jaycees partnered with the City of Texas City to host a city-wide Easter Egg hunt for school-age children. It was attended by many, many children who raced to collect eggs with children in their age group. These eggs were exchanged for a gift bag of candy. Children who found the “golden” egg were awarded packed Easter Baskets. The TCLM Jaycees did the cooking for this event and we handed out 250 hotdogs, chips and drinks. This is an annual City event and an example of how we, the Jaycees, give back to our community.
On May 7th, two of the Jaycees officers and an active member attended the Texas City High School Awards Ceremony where we awarded 6 talented students who proved their commitment to education as well as a commitment to community with $300.00 scholarships to go towards their higher education. These students not only excelled in academics but showed an interest and involvement in community functions and volunteer efforts. These students demonstrated high morals and desires and we were happy to help them in their future endeavors. Hopefully, these students will be our future Jaycees members!
2012 Recipients: Nicole Bulow, Shannon Doyle, Hailey Dopey, Mariana Flores, Oriel Garcia, Michelle Vargas
We were set up at Hole #7 for the 4th Annual TCPD Police Week Golf Tournament and were offering a chance to beat Ricky Wilkenfield on a drive at that hole for $5.00 each or a team for $20. Whoever could beat Ricky (and there weren’t many) was given a t-shirt and hat from last year’s Tackle Time. A big THANK YOU to Ricky Wilkenfield for sharing his talents. His efforts alone provided a lot of support for the Jaycees. We all have talents that can be beneficial in one way or the other to our cause. “It takes a village!”
Every Quarter, the Texas City La Marque Jaycees send up to 3 volunteers from our organization to the Galveston County Food Bank. Blake Carroll is our Community Project Service Chairman and he assigns people to work this day.
"I was one of the volunteers to work last Sat., May 5 and I was amazed at the proficiency and organization that was orchestrated at the Food Bank. It is a huge operation whose need is ongoing. There was a constant but organized flow of people who had registered and qualified for this service. The front room where the products are actually chosen and distributed is just a small part of what goes on in the back where contributions are checked in, sorted and sent out to either their own floor in the front of the building or to area seniors, schools, etc. I was very impressed at the smooth flow this took but it was also apparent that many volunteers are needed to continue this community service. TCLM Jaycees will continue to help with this to “Give back to our community”. –Dana Rogers

Charlie Gonzalez, 2009 Slot Redfish Winner - 11 lbs. 3 oz.
The Rick Rogers Memorial Award was created by the Texas City La Marque Jaycees in 2005 to honor all-around good fisherman under the age of 18. Rick Rogers was the oldest son of Dana Rogers and he grew up fishing with his family in the Tackle Time Tournament.
The Rogers family always planned their summers around Tackle Time because the tournament was a deep-rooted family tradition. Rick graduated from Texas A&M University with a Wildlife Fisheries degree and a strong desire to pursue a career in and around wildlife. He was working at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge on a project to protect the Whooping Crane when he drowned while on the job. That was Feb. 3, 2005.
The next summer, the Jaycees decided to honor and remember Rick with the “Rick Rogers Memorial Award”. This award is given to an all-around good fisherman under the age of 18. The winner of this award receives a beautiful plaque and a $500 prize.
Rick would be so proud to be part of a new tradition that encourages kids to build memories with their families in the outdoors as he did. We are also very proud to present this award to a kid who loves fishing as much as Rick did.
